Impromptu speech

My experience of my impromptu speech was very scary at first but once it was over it was fine. It was awkward when no one laughed at first and it made me feel a little insecure. Overall it was a very positive experience and it helped that other people agreed with my point.

A.    Liz Murray’s Story
B.     Southern Oklahoma States Definition of Affirmative Action
C.     “Today I want to talk about affirmative action and how it is a positive system for accepting students into universities. My Two points are that affirmative action changes the perception of universities from a negative to a positive and that affirmative action promotes diversity in the classroom.”
II.                Rebuttal
III.             Changes perception of universities from a negative to a positive
A.    African Americans could see an all-white school as intimidating and racist.
1.      Could be said for other genders, people of different class
2.      Makes the student uncomfortable and they will avoid the school
B.     This change has to be done with affirmative action
1.      Impossible to be done organically, need to use quotas and other forms of affirmative action to even it out
2.      How are we going to help these people succeed? It is not enough to say “I want everyone to be treated equally” Need to give these people a chance
IV.             Promotes diversity in the classroom
A.    Diversity is good
1.      The Harvard survey
2.      The students feedback/ the change they went through
B.     The benefit of being around other students from different cultures and backgrounds
