Impromptu speech

My experience of my impromptu speech was very scary at first but once it was over it was fine. It was awkward when no one laughed at first and it made me feel a little insecure. Overall it was a very positive experience and it helped that other people agreed with my point.

Knowledge Bowl

1. Four Forms of public speaking:

Informative-helping the audience understand and remember your topic. Requires research on speakers part. The speech is formal and has a visual aid.

Persuasive- Convincing the audience to side with your stance of a topic. Requires research  The speech is formal and has an argument model. Evidence+Reasoning=Claim

Commemorative- Emotional speech. Dedicated to someone who is important to the speaker. Speech has metaphors and imagery.

Entertain- This speech is completely for entertaining the audience and making them laugh. This speech is informal, something that would be said at a dinner speech.

2. Define:

Rhetoric- The art of speaking or writing effectively: as the study of writing or speaking as a means of communication or persuasion.

Audience Centeredness- Keeping the audience foremost in mind every step of the speech preparation and presentation. Adapting to relate to the audience.

Central Ideas- Sum up major ideas. 1. Should be expressed in a full sentence 2. should not be in the form of a question 3. Should avoid being vague or overly general.

Specific Purpose- What you plan to accomplish through your speech. 1. must be a full phrase 2. not a question 3.avoid figurative language 4. concentrate on one distinct area 5. not be vague or general.

Commemorative Speech


Nathan Corbett, My best friend
A friend is someone who never lets you tackle a giant alone. A friend knows how to make you laugh when you’re having a day so bad you can’t talk about it. A friend lets you shine. A friend loves unconditionally, forgives you for your mistakes and brags about your achievements. Today I want to praise my friend, he is a comedian, a survivor and a romantic: Nathan Ryan Corbett
Nathan was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He was born on July 24th 1987. From diaper to diploma Nathan was cracking people up. Some kids would feel special bringing home a good grade from school to pin on the fridge or hearing the screams from the stands when they scored the winning goal, Not Nathan though. He thrives off of seeing someone smile so big their eyes water and their cheeks turn pink. The funniest thing he does is imitate famous voices. His favorite s are Bill Cosby and Shawn Connery. These voices come out during the most random times! Like when he pretends to have road rage, Bill cosby will come out. Everywhere we go Nathan is somehow making someone smile or just bust out laughing. Nathan has a light around him and its contagious. Nathan is a comedian.
When in high school Nathan fell in love with radio broadcasting. He went to community college and interned at the radio station there. On top of school and his internship, Nathan was working. It was during this busy time in his life when he was diagnosed with Crohns disease. He was in and out of the hospital due to stomach pain. He did manage to finish his AA in radio broadcasting. When he was twenty three, he had part of his small intestine removed. All the way up to the procedure Nathan had a positive attitude but once he had the surgery he started to get depressed. He moved back into his parents’ house because he was so sick and it was hard to take care of himself alone. He didn’t go on to finish his undergrad because his hospital stays were so frequent he was worried that he would fall behind in school. A combination of depression and physical pain lead Nathan to turn to alcohol. It numbed him from the stomach pain and temporarily helped him forget about how messed up his life had gotten.  I think what frustrated him the most was that his dream of radio broadcasting seemed to have fallen through  because the internship had run out when he got his AA and because of his disease he couldn’t really handle radio shifts from 5pm to 3 or 4am. One day his uncle Gary called him and offered him a job at his eye glass store. Gary was actually offering him the whole business. For six months Nathan ignored the offer and dwelled in his depression. He eventually snapped out of it when he realized that this was an opportunity to do something better for his life. He accepted and his uncle also offered his basement to stay in until he got on his feet. Gary lived in Redmond Washington so Nathan pack up his car and his moms and drove up there. Once here Nathan decided to focus on work and his relationship with God. He quit drinking and went to church (which is how he met me). He also did research on crohns and found a medicine that helps keep the flareups at bay. Nathan decided to move forward and better himself and his life. God was just waiting for him to come closer instead of standing still. Nathan is a survivor.
Lastly, Nathan is a romantic. The first time he came to church with his aunt and uncle, I was leading worship. After the worship set was over he whispered to his aunt sitting next to him that he was going to marry me. At the time I wasn’t ready to date anyone so he stayed close by volunterring to play drums for the worship team. I remember the first time I saw him at practice, everything around him went out of focus and all I could see was his smile. I think I stared at him for at least a minute straight before I realized what I was doing. Embarrassed, I looked away. My heart was pounding and my palms were sweaty. I couldn’t focus on the chords that I was playing because I wanted us to meet eye contact again. I thought it was a stupid crush and I tried to ignore him. I was even mean to him a couple times. The first time I actually talked to him I told him how dirty his drum set was. My playing hard to get didn’t work however because he asked me on a date and I said yes. It was my first date, I was terrified but it was perfect. I will never forget that night; Dinner on the water front, The way he looked at me, how easily he made me laugh, walking around downtown getting lost and my black ballet flats getting soaked in the rain. A month passed and I agreed to be his girlfriend. Being nathans girlfriend was like waking up to a summer day everyday. It wasn’t just because of the flowers or the dates and love notes. It was the nerf gun wars in the house, the random hiking adventures off the path, and the thousands of times we found ourselves rolling on the floor in laughter. He pursued me, made me laugh and treated me with respect. Nathan is a romantic.
A week before this last Christmas, Nathan had been hospitalized for two days because of a bad crohns flare up. I stayed with him the whole time and doing this made me realize how much I wanted to be there for him always and take care of him. After he got out of the hospital he took me to this park in Bellevue to stargaze. He gave me this card(read this). Once I finished reading it he walked to his car and brought a giant present to me. I was laughing and I asked him what was inside and of course he wouldn’t tell me. I opened it to find another box wrapped in Santa wrapping paper. This went on for ten or twelve boxes and I started to get frustrated. Then I opened the last little box. I saw the Morgan jeweler’s box and before I could open it he stopped my hand and took the little box from me. He opened it and pulled the ring out. He got on one knee and told me how he knew he wanted to marry me from the moment he first saw me. He told me that God was working on him to make him a better man to prepare him for me, for us. He thanked me for staying with him in the hospital and he thanked me for always being there. Then, he asked me those four words that every girl dreams of hearing. In reality the space between his question and my response was thirty seconds or so but that bridge I was walking across, going from Nathan and Mercedes to Mr and Mrs Corbett was so long. It was raining out side and the raindrops were falling on his face, making his eyelashes stick together. His eyes looked so happy I thought they were going to burst. It was in this moment I looked back on the nerf gun wars, the hiking adventures , our first date and realized that Nathan is someone who never lets me tackle a giant alone. Nathan knows how to make me laugh when I have a day so bad I cant talk about it. Nathan lets me shine. Lastly, Nathan loves me unconditionally, he forgives me for any mistakes I make and he always brags about my achievements.
On that rainy Wednesday night in December I said I would marry Nathan Ryan Corbett. He is a comedian, A survivor, a romantic and most of all he is my best friend, my gift from God whom I get to spend the rest of my life with.

Speech Plan for Informative Speech

Topic of Speech: Crohns Disease


Purpose: Informative

Specific Purpose: My specific purpose is to inform my audience about Crohns Disease


Intro:  : Imagine a young man writhing in pain on the bathroom floor. He had been vomiting for most of the day even though he hadn’t eaten anything. His body felt like he had gotten hit by a semi truck going 80 in a 45. He was so weak that when his brother carried him to the car to go to the emergency room, he couldn’t muster up the energy to put on his seatbelt.  This is the story of my Fiancé Nathan. Shortly after his hospital visit he was diagnosed with Crohns Disease. 
Crohns disease is an intestinal disease that according to the US Department of Health and Human Services one in five-hundred Americans suffer from. Nathan told me about his disease when we first started dating and naturally I was curious to know more about it so I went and did as much research as I could so I could support him.  Today I would like to tell you about Crohns disease and share what I learned. By explaining first what Crohns disease is, the cause and how it is treated and finally I’m going to share how different Nathan’s lifestyle is since he has been diagnosed with Crohns.

Preview:  Today I would like to tell you about Crohns disease and share what I learned. By explaining first what Crohns disease is, the cause and how it is treated and finally I’m going to share how different Nathan’s lifestyle is since he has been diagnosed with Crohns.  

Outline:


I.                   What is Crohns Disease? What are its symptoms
A.    Crohns disease was named after Dr. Burrill B. Crohn who discovered the disease in 1932.
B.     Crohns disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that occurs in the Intestinal tract.
1.      The American Society of Colon and rectal surgeons says that the inflammation may occur in any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus, it most commonly affects the last part of the small intestine (ileum) and/or the large intestine (colon and rectum).
2.      The inflammation that occurs is nicknamed flare-ups by patients and doctors. These Flare-ups come and go and are very unpredictable. A Crohns patient could go months or years without having a flare-up.
C.     Crohns disease can be confused with ulcerative colitis because Both of these diseases have similar symptoms
1.      Ulcerative colitis only effects the lining of the large intestine while Crohns affects the entire thickness of the bowel wall
2.      Ulcerative Colitis can be cured through surgery whereas Crohns disease cannot.
D.    The common symptoms of Crohns disease are: pain in the abdomen and diarrhea, bleeding from the rectum, weight loss, joint pain, skin problems and fever can sometimes occur. 
1.       Children with the disease may have growth problems. Other problems can include intestinal blockage and malnutrition.
2.      It’s not very common that children get this disease. Its affects mainly young adults from 15-40.



II.                The cause of Crohns and How it is treated.
A.    The cause of Crohns disease is unknown, but researchers believe it is the result of an abnormal reaction by the body’s immune system
1.      National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse says:” in Crohn’s disease the immune system attacks bacteria, foods, and other substances that are actually harmless or beneficial. During this process, white blood cells accumulate in the lining of the intestines, producing chronic inflammation, which leads to ulcers, or sores, and injury to the intestines.”
2.      In other words: People who have Crohns, their immune system over reacts and attacks everything. Causing inflammation to the intestines.
B.     Crohns Disease is Genetic. More commonly seen passed from brother to sister.
C.     People who smoke have a higher risk of getting Crohns and people who come from Jewish heritage have a higher risk.
D.    Treatment of Crohns varies from person to person and also how severe their Crohns is.
1.      Almost always, someone with Crohns is going to need long-lasting medical care and regular doctor visits to monitor the condition.
2.      The different medications and treatments include:   Antibiotics, Steroids, Anti inflammation medication, Immune system suppressors, Biological medications, surgery and special vitamins/supplements.
E.     Some people have long periods of remission.  Predicting when a remission may occur or when symptoms will return is not possible. This changing pattern of the disease makes it difficult to be certain a treatment has helped.
III.             How has Nathans Lifestyle Changed?
A.    Since being diagnosed with Crohns Nathan avoids hard to digest foods like raw vegetables, oily foods and things with seeds when he does eat these foods it’s extremely obvious because he will be in a lot of pain. 
B.     Nathan has to avoid stress at all causes because this increases flare-ups as well.
1.      He makes an effort to take time to himself as much as possible to unwind and relax.
2.      Avoids video games because of how easily frustrated and worked up he gets
C.     Nathan digests his food fairly fast so if we go and do things together we have to make sure that there will be a bathroom around for him to go to. This has never really been a problem except for long car rides but we avoid eating meals during those until we get to our destination.
D.    Lastly Nathan is going to the doctors a lot. He is having Biological medication injected into his body every two months by an IV. It is called Remicade.
1.      Remicade is a fully genetically engineered human antibody that reduces the inflammation that Crohns causes.
2.      Nathan has to sit in a chair for three hours while the fluid is processed into his body.
3.      Even though this medicine reduces his inflammation it of course doesn’t remove it completely. 

Conclusion:  Since doing more research on what Crohns is, the other treatments, and how to change our lifestyle to prevent flare-ups,   Nathan and I have been eating healthier together and learning other tips  to keep the inflammation astray. I'm happy to say that he hasn’t had any fair up in five months. Crohns disease is a very unpredictable intestinal disease that has no cure, but there are many foundations out there that hold annual walks. Mike Mcready, the guitarist from Pearl Jam, has Crohns and has started a foundation and a huge following in hopes of discovering a cure.












Online Analysis of Two Model Informative Speeches

1. What is the Central Idea (thesis) for each speech? 

The central idea for "The hidden world of chili peppers" is to talk about the history of the pepper, why they are so spicy, what to do if one eats a pepper that is too hot and ways peppers are used in other foods.


The central idea for "Medical Robots: From Science Fiction to Science Fact"  is talking about how robots are changing modern medicine, robots such as Orderly robots, remote-presence robots and surgical robots. 


2. How do the speakers catch attention?

The speaker for "the hidden world of chili peppers" catches the audience's attention by explaining what it feels like to eat a pepper. Because of his use of  imagery to explain the experience, the audience very easily to this story drawing them in. 

The speaker for "Medical Robots: From Science Fiction to Science Fact" catches the audiences attention by telling a story about a robot helping a surgeon perform a surgery. The speaker used imagery also to explain the story painting a picture for the audience.

3. How does author of Chili Peppers show credibility? 

He shows credibility by telling the audience that he loved spicy foods and wanted to learn more about why/how the peppers were making his body react in the way that it did. He explained to the audience how he did research on the topic because of his interest.

This speeches are audience centered because they both begin with an attention grabber. Also both speeches have visual aids which hold the audiences attention after the hook is finished. Both speeches have appropriate visual aids that are not distracting. 


3. How do the author's build credibility?

The authors build credibility by explaining how they know about the topic. The speaker for Medical Robots is a medical student and they were interested in these robots. The speaker for Chili Peppers, he had a love for spicy foods and wanted to learn more about why he would have such an intense reaction to the spiciness.

Reflection for Welcome to My World Speech


Reflection:
 What surprised you about the presentation and what could you do to improve  time you speak?

I was surprised how easy it was presenting my speech. I was really worried how I would speak in front of the class especially because I was talking about something so personal. The book was right though! Once I got through my intro it was smooth sailing! I was surprised how attentive my peers were as well. I assumed they wouldn't be paying attention but I noticed that I had everyone's eye contact which calmed my nerves a little as well. I would have practiced a little bit more in front of my friends. I noticed that I was crossing my legs and playing with my note cards. I think if I practiced more I would have been more aware of my body.
